for all of us here at nbc news, good night. good evening and thanks for joining us. i'm diane dwyer. tonight police in one san jose neighborhood are calling for changes after a teenage girl was hit and killed by a light rail train right in front of her school. 14-year-old danika garcia was riding her bike to delmar high school friday morning when she was hit. nbc bay area's kimberly terry joins us from the crossing at southwest expressway with more on what neighbors say has to change there. kimberly? >> reporter: diane, you mentioned the proximity between the school and where the accident happened so we want to show you that distance. in fact, this is the field behind delmar high school, and as you can see it butts right up against the light rail tracks. currently there are barriers on

either side of the tracks and signs warning people to look both ways but now some are calling for more to be done to keep kids safe. santa clara county deputies say 14-year-old danika garcia was riding her bike on southwest expressway when she was struck and killed. there is a security guard stated height rear now but it's unclear whether one was here friday morning when the girl was hi. now neighbors say something has to change and the people we spoke with think both the vta and the pedestrians need to be involved in that change. some residents say the change should slow down at the crossing and others say others who use that crossing to get to delmar high school need to be more cautious. >> now, a lot of security, you know, as far as the bar and the railing, kids need to be more aware of how dangerous it is to challenge trains and so forth. >> there's a lot of kids in this area. should be a little lesser around

here, so more crosswalks at the vta, you know, because we cross the streets. cars don't want to stop and they get mad and staff like that. >> the santa clara county sheriff's office won't comment on the case other than to say it's still under investigation, but today the valley transportation authority issued a statement saying they take safety incredibly seriously and use a youth outreach program to make sure students have key information on safety on and around rail corridors and light rail trains. classmates of danika's continue to show up at the scene of the accident to add pictures, flowers and notes to what is a growing memorial. the principal at delmar hoy school says grief counselors are scheduled to be on campus when classes resume on tuesday. live in san jose, kimberly terry, nbc bay area news. >> kimberly, thank you. developing news now. oakland police are on the scene of a deadly double shooting. detectives say two people were shot and killed on 100th avenue and longfellow across the

freeway from the oakland zoo. investigators are not releasing much other information on the victims at this moment. there's also no word on a suspect description or motive. one man is under arrest and another is in critical conditiontant after a shouting match ended with a stabbing. it happened on the embarcadero in san francisco. police responded to reports of a fight near rincon park just before 2:00 a.m. when officers arrived they found a 26-year-old man who had been stabbed repeatedly. he was rushed to the hospital and is listed in critical condition with life-threatening injuries. investigators have arrested a 55-year-old man in connection with that attack after they say they found him hiding near the crime scene. tonight there's word that two high school basketball coaches have been fired in the wake of hazing allegations had a hoy-profile san francisco attorney is now involved in this case. according to "the san francisco chronicle," two players on the woodside high school basketball team were beaten, gagged and duct taped to chairs by teammates during a road trip

last month. we cannot reach the district superintendent for comment tonight, but in comments to "the chronicle" he called the indent extremely unfortunate. now attorney chris dolan is said to be exploring legal action against the high school district. dolan made headlines recently as the family for the attorney of jahi mcmath, an east bay teenager at the center of a national life support fight. fire crews have now contained a fire that destroyed a family-owned construction company in san jose today. the fire started shortly after 11:00 this morning in the back of the commercial building on almadin road near 87. >> they did heavy fire conditions that they were able to keep checked to the back and middle part of the building. we were able to salvage a lot of sensitive office equipment, computer hard drives, record, things like that. >> the cause of that fire is still under investigation tonight. well, it has been a beautiful weekend, but we are missing the rain. here's a live look at the bay bridge in downtown san francisco, and let's bring in meteorologist anthony carter.

anthony, winter weather really could be coming back? >> sounds like a miracle but actually we could be talking about some rain at least a week from today. computer models talking about a good chance of showers moving through the bay area by next monday. this would be miraculous if that does happen. we've been in one of our driest jaers ever, and we've definitely excited about this rain that we'll potentially receive next week. clear skies are in control and high pressure is still on top of us, a and what's going to happen as we head towards this upcoming week, high pressure will start to break down. we have a double barrel area of low pressure spinning out across the gulf of alaska. you can see both of those spins coupled in this system. that will eventually move this way. it's going to turn and bring the return of fog back to the bay area and eventually as we head to the upcoming weekend, that will open the storm door so by monday, next monday, we could be talking about a few showers. otherwise right now temperatures in the 50s and a few 60s still out in san francisco, and, again, we won't expect any fog

for tomorrow morning, but we'll talk about what this fog does return. back on tuesday and i'll be back in a bit t talk more about that. >> thanks a bit. >> and on friday governor brown declared a drought emergency. it's the driest year since the state started measuring rainfall, and that was way back in 1849 when we started that. now, some people living in central california are taking steps to conserve. more now from salinas. >> people are really scared and worried about what's going to happen without no rain. >> reporter: at this nursery in the past few years, business has been a little slow. staff say the drought is to blame. >> talking with customers and other vendors, people are scared to buy plants because they will have to water them and they don't know what to put in yet. >> reporter: those customers out shopping this weekend said the forecast dry conditions were a consideration in choosing which plants to buy. >> we're also attempting to determine exactly what level of water consumption the plants will have.

>> reporter: candace gregory says her lawn is already gone, but she's trying different ways to save the rest of her garden while keeping water usage down. >> just trying to conserve and so trading off things so i can water my garden. >> reporter: because of concerns about watering local nurseries say customers are looking for alternatives for their lawns, but they are also buying more drought-tolerant plants. >> people are going to be putting a lot of bark in, putting gravel. >> gravel helps keep moisture in the ground and it's still important to cut back on watering overall. >> you want it to be or cut back your lawn. >> again, so far the call to reduce water resumption is temporary. well, there's a big game

going on today, if you're a football fan, that is. as 49ers fans cheer on their team tonight san francisco police are making sure that celebrations don't get out of hand after the game. nbc bay area's michael francis joins us from the mission district where it sound like it's pretty loud. what's going on right now. >> reporter: it's getting a little bit loud right here, but police are adding what they call a substantial number of officers tonight, and they are concentrating those officers in places like this, like the mission district where the people typically come to gather to watch these games. right now certainly there are hundreds if not thousand of people in the mission and all over this city inside bars watching the game, and the concern is what will happen once the game is over, and all of those people filter out into the streets. officers are expected to be prepared with crowd control or riot gear in the event that the celebrations get out of hands. recently vandalism has become the norm in the mission after a big sporting event. last year after the super bowl police were out in force dispersing the crowds and making arrests. traffic officers even shut down

parts of mission street to prevent cruising after last year's super bowl. today muni has taken steps to prevent accidents involving rowdy fans. every cable car line has been shut down or limited. the agency has replaced the s market street cars with buses so the overhead wires can be turned off. that's because fans have been known to climb on top of street cars and light rail vehicles and get too close to the wires. it's still pretty calm here in the mission to the. we'll keep you posted, and we'll have the full story what have unfolds tonight at 11:00. live in san francisco, monty francis, nbc bay area news. >> thanks, month. coming up at 6:00, new concerns about circuit court weeks before the winter games. the latest on a new threat. plus the bay area honors civil rights leader martin luther king, and a live version of "the sound of music" was a big hit and the next musical coming to television, a hint, from way back in 1955. presents...

there are new security concerns ahead of the winter games in russia. russian president pollute pollute said he'll do, quote, whatever necessary to make the games safe. nbc's richard engel has more from sochi. >> reporter: we are now in sochi with just about one month to go before this city will host the winter olympics and security concerns have already started to

overshadow these games. there have been two recent terrorist attacks not here in sochi but a few hundred miles away and the biggest concern is that militants from the north caucasus will try and carry out attacks perhaps not right in this area, because this area already is very secure and will be even more scour in the lead up to the games, officials assure us, but perhaps somewhere else in this very broad country. another concern is the criticism taking place in russia, particularly that these games have been so expensive. already $50 billion for all of the infrastructure required for these games. this city was not considered a winter resort in the past. people came here, in fact, to spend their summers, but vladamir putin, who was in that stadium, that hockey stadium just the other day, showing that this country is ready, that the games will be safe, decided that he wanted to have it in sochi, and that's why all of this money is being spent, all of this

infrastructure built and putin says these games will be safe. already there have been tens of thousands of police and security personnel brought in here in sochi and throughout the surrounding area. richard engel, nbc news, sochi. in san francisco hundred of people gathered to pay tribute to dr. martin luther king jr. at glide memorial church today. two special services this morning included poetry and music, along with words from reverend cecil williams who marched with king from selma to montgomery. he's led the northern california efforts to honor the slain civil rights leader and supporters say they appreciate his efforts. >> it means a leader who fought for civil rights. and because of him latinos have civil rights in this country. >> tomorrow is the official holiday and people are urged to better help their community. there are several community event planned all around the bay

area. caltrain will run its annual freedom train in honor of dr. king. it leaves san jose at 10:00 a.m. and runs non-stop to san francisco. organizers have warned low turnout is threatening to end the annual tradition. participation has declined over the past decade and the freedom train in the bay area is still the only one in operation. tickets cost $15 with a discount for seniors, and you can get more information by searching freedom train on our website at nbcbayarea.com. a bay-area man is one of two marines this weekend who were awarded the distinguished navy cross. captain matthew minukan of los altos hills and sergeant scott mote were killed when an afghan police officer opened fire in a military outpost in 2012. the two men's actions allowed other marines to escape. they were the 15th and 16th marines to receive the navy cross during the war in afghanistan. it is the navy's highest honor and the military's second highest medal of valor in

combat. coming up next. track and field star lolo jones has never made the podium during the summer olympics so now she's trying her hands at the winter games. the sport she just qualified for, and jay leno is saying good-bye to late night. we know now who his final guest will be. >> after sparing the air for two days this past weekend air quality does improve. as we head towards the upcoming week, the return of fall and potential showers. we'll talk about that coming up.

nooeks nbc will aim for the second star to the right with its next live musical production. the parent company will present a live updated version of "peter

pan" next december. the new musical comes on the heels of a live version of "the sound of mice being" last year and this won't be the first time that nbc has produced a live version of "peter pan." you're looking at footage of the last nbc performance way back in 1955. the cast has yet to be determined for next year's show. "the tonight show" is about to under go a very big change, in case you haven't heard. jay leno is stepping down as host and the show will move from l.a. to new york. now we know who will be joining leno for his last few shows. his guest for the final week will include new "tonight show" host, of course, jimmy fallon and betty white who will make her 19th appearance on the show. matthew mcconaughey will visit one last time as will 23-time guest charles barkley. leno's first ever guest on "the tonight show" will return as the she's final guest appropriately enough on thursday, february 6th. right now we have the star of our show meteorologist anthony slaughter with its

microclimate. hello. >> you know we're talking about some warm temperatures today in the bay area. we got up to the mid to upper 70s in some of our warmest locations, gilroy, even los gatos got up to 77 degrees. the forecast tomorrow in some locations will be just as warm. we're talking about the return of fog, cooler weather and even the potential of showers. we'll talk about that coming up. now you'll notice again as we saw those temperatures today back in the 60s and 70s. this is what we're going to find as we head through the day tomorrow. not going to wake up with a lot of cloud cover and right now from our sky camera network you can see across the skies from every microclimate region and once we do wake-up we'll start off clear and by the afternoon temperatures will soar once again back into the upper 60s in san francisco and lower 70s in our inland valley from the north bay, east bay and over to the tri-valley. let's get you back over to the hour-by-hour forecast. back to the south bay, that's when we'll see temperatures back in the mid-60s by noon and 5:00

up to 71 degrees. the peninsula a little bit cooler and mid-60s by the time we hit munch and 5:00 with the dry home. san francisco, going to peak early. seeing temperatures cooling and the onshore wind starts to return. north bay, east bay and tri-vale, expecting a good mix of 60s by afternoon and off towards 70s by 5:00. we'll see plenty of sunshine for tomorrow and here's the thing, area of high pressure is starting to break down and each and every day it is going to break down and allow for that marine layer to develop. by tuesday i think we'll be waking up to morning fog. definitely make sure you want to keep it there on area bridges. fog-free and not talking about a whole lot and here we go tuesday and then into wednesday and thursday we'll keep with that pattern of morning fog, but by the middle part of this week we'll probably have a better idea of the showers that the computer models are starting to pick up on and that would come as we head towards sunday and morning of this upcoming next

week. take it into that seven-day forecast in san francisco and what you'll find by tuesday and wednesday. not until the weekend, really what we want to focus on here, saturday and sunday we'll see the marine layer really intensify and some computer models can see some showers off the coast of san francisco, so by sunday, again, this will be something that we're watching, you can see the computer up at the top next sunday. cloud cover starts to increase and look at this, the best chance we've had for rain all year long. looks like it will make a run monday night into tuesday morning and it will be next week. there is time off and, again, any computer model showing any sign of ryan. very good news so we'll be tracking it all week long. go to nbcbayarea.com. diane. back over to you. >> can't wait for that rain. thanks, anthony. >> coming up, the jamaican

the u.s. olympic bobsled team has been named and a moirnt yeah pilot will pilot one of the sleds in sochi. the u.s. bobsled and skeleton foundation named nick cunningham as a pilot for the four-man race.

sochi marks his second olympic games and track and field champion lolo jones has been officially named to the u.s. women's bobsled team. this is file video of jones during a community event in des moines last november. both she and fellow track and field stars lauryn williams were chosen. she failed to make it to the podium in the 2008 and 2012 summer olympics. and for the first time in over a decade a jamaican bobsled team has qualified for the olympic games but they are having trouble getting to sochi. out two-man team needs to raise $40,000 to cover travel and equipment expenses so they are asking the internet to help. they set up a paypal account to fund their trip. rate now we've got henry wofford joining us for comcast sportsnet. not at all stressful at some other games that's going up. what's going on with you? >> absolutely. there's a lot going on in the san francisco 49ers nfc

championship guide. very serious jacksonville jaguar that just took place and the flying tomato secures another spot on the u.s. olympic team in sochi and speaking of snow the commissioner of the nfl, well, he could be braving the elements as welcome february. we'll tell you why. and it was the first afc championship game in history featuring two starting quarterbacks who are both at least 36 years old. manning versus brady. highlights are next.

a hard conference to wings, and you feel like you've done something to win the championship. you realize that you still want to win one more game. whoever we're playing is going to be a tremendous opponent, whether it's san francisco or seattle, but you do take a moment to realize that we have done something special here and you certainly want to win one more. >> last year's loss in the championship game was tough. this year is pretty tough solution, yeah, losing is not easy. but, you know, i give them a lot of credit because they played really well and they made a lot of plays offensively and defensively, and they have a good football team so they are going to be tough to beat in a couple of weeks. >> over to the olympics, two-time olympic half time champion will have a chance to go for gold again in sochi winning the average qualifier for 96.6. qualified for a new olympic
